Elvis was famously shot only from the waist up when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1956. Sullivan had previously deemed him “unfit for family viewing,” with all that pelvis stabbing, but when Elvis appeared on Steve Allen’s show singing “Hound Dog” to a basset hound wearing a top hat Sullivan, not wanting to be upstaged, booked Elvis to appear for three shows.
Sullivan wasn’t present for the shows, however, and when watching clips of the performance, figured Elvis had “some kind of device” in his pants, so “when he moves his legs back and forth you can see the outline of his c*ck. I think it’s a Coke bottle. We just can’t have this on a Sunday night. This is a family show!”
